This documentary explores the plight of the coral-covered avian species as climate change wreaks havoc on marine habitats. In the mid-twentieth century, it seems, most of the planet’s birds were living wild, free of whatever disturbance the environment might throw at them. Now, as the effects of a warming planet continue to play out, the diminishing sea allows marine life — animals that once used reefs for shelter — to wither away.

In the modern age, in particular, the oceans seem designed to give birds some cover. And indeed, birds are more immune to physical shocks, like predators or storms, than humans are. So, they must cope with the impact of shrinking oceans on their bodies in a way that only human beings might.

Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson explains what it’s like to be the hunted, and that sense of being hunted takes on new meaning as a direct result of global warming. “I watch these birds, and it feels to me, like I’m looking at them again as a predator.”
