'SNL' loses Taylor Swift, Kate McKinnon at #TayTay's open

The frigid northern temperatures proved too cold for some to attend Sunday night’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” including superstar host Taylor Swift.

Despite being “crippled” by an upper respiratory infection that forced her to postpone her London stop on her “Reputation” tour, the Grammy-winning singer dressed up as the host, and Kate McKinnon as actress Maya Rudolph and played musical guests Miley Cyrus and Imagine Dragons.

Swift couldn’t be on hand to welcome the trio, who joined her for a surprise musical number that saw Michaels and fellow producer Lorne Michaels chime in with recollections of hosting the show for the first time. She did get a live performance out of the trio, though. With plenty of energy to spare, the singer got the audience to sing along on the chorus of Cyrus’ 1985 song “Piece of My Heart.”

Swift also showed off a comedic side in her opening monologue that made reference to Alec Baldwin’s impersonation of her on “SNL” and referenced the viral social media meeting between several female senators and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The tour closer marks Swift’s third time hosting “SNL,” following appearances in 2014 and 2015.

Swift’s performance on the show is the third time “SNL” welcomed a new cast member to the stage — Kevin Hart last hosted the show in October.

NBC said that Swift’s co-host McKinnon would again play Hillary Clinton on “SNL.”
