Canadian authorities have found burning containers inside a crowded shipping container off the British Columbia coast after a fire broke out Tuesday.

The Canadian Coast Guard says the fire was extinguished after a lengthy search. It says about 400 residents were evacuated as a precaution and that about 20 passengers also were evacuated.

The Coast Guard says it’s not yet known whether the blaze was caused by a spill or from a cargo ship.

The Vancouver Sun reports a tug boat reported flames coming from the container just before 4 a.m. The Coast Guard’s K.L. Snowbird dispatched a cutter, Royal Canadian Navy ice breaker and divers to the scene about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) east of Vancouver.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Tara Molle told the Canadian Press that the blaze was reported by a tug vessel near Grassy Point, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Vancouver.
