Pop star Britney Spears has been declared free of her father’s control over her personal and business affairs.

A court order dissolving the conservatorship over her, which has been in place since 2006, was entered on Friday.

Spears, 35, was under the control of her father Jamie since her infamous 2007 breakdown in which she was hospitalised twice.

Britney was greeted at the Los Angeles courthouse on Friday with screams and applause.

The singer reportedly said that she is “feeling really relieved and happy and grateful”.

Jamie Spears – who has two children with the star – told ABC News that he would keep a “close eye” on his daughter.

“She knows that I am always there to support her and I will always protect her,” he said.

Britney is said to have earned $110m (£86m) between 2007 and 2017, as part of her deal to play 2016 tour at her Vegas residency.

Meanwhile, Jamie Spears has said he is thinking of retiring.

“I don’t know whether this is the end, this is a beginning,” he said.

The conservatorship was set up to “ensure continued health and safety for Britney and her children” and “to protect her personal and financial interests”.

Spears took an emotional break from giving testimony in 2017 over the conservatorship.

“I need to heal from this breakdown. I have kids to raise and I’ve got bills to pay,” she said during the hearing.

“There is no way I should have to be an account manger for myself, it is disgusting.”

Spears, whose hits include Baby One More Time and Toxic, is now in the process of hiring a new manager.
