Mayor John Tory has become embroiled in a scandal regarding his compensation package. In May, five months after he was re-elected to a second term, he was deemed “arrogant” and “self-centred” by Toronto city councillors for referring to himself as a “Mayor First” in an email to other council members.

The emails included a transcription of an article in the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail which described the mayor’s acknowledgment of his criticisms on Twitter against an ally of his, Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby. Conservative members of council argued that Tory did not use proper decorum and protocol to address his council colleagues. The emails also included a screenshot of a conversation between Tory and fellow Conservative Councillor Paul Ainslie on the matter of the mayor’s salary. After drawing to a close, Tory wrote the following to Ainslie: “I am surprised by the article that has appeared.
