Police have said they are investigating the death of a 60-year-old woman as a homicide after finding a revolver where she was found injured.
Anne Marie McLaughlin was found by her daughters with multiple stab wounds to her body in her Dundonald home in the north east of Edinburgh on Friday.
Officers believe she died sometime on Thursday.
Police are appealing for witnesses and say they have recovered a gun which matches wounds on the body.
The family of the murder victim issued a plea for anyone with information to come forward.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: “Detectives are appealing for witnesses in the investigation of the fatal stabbing of a 60-year-old woman in Dundonald on Friday.
“Officers received a call at 14:45 hours reporting that a deceased woman had been discovered at a property in Dundonald.
“Anne Marie McLaughlin, who lived in Dundonald, was a mother and wife and previously lived in the Haddington area.
“Detectives believe Ms McLaughlin was assaulted in her home at a time before her body was found on Friday.
“A licensed firearm recovered by officers does match the wounds sustained by Ms McLaughlin.”
Detective Superintendent Colin Brown, of Tayside Police, said: “I would appeal to anyone who has any information in relation to this incident to get in touch as soon as possible.
“At this early stage in the investigation, I would encourage anyone who may have noticed anything unusual around the time of the incident or observed anyone acting suspiciously to contact police or 101.
“I would also like to stress the public should not jump to conclusions and should treat reports of any suspicious behaviour with caution.”

Strathclyde Police said they were making enquiries and contacting local agencies to try to gather information to aid in the investigation.
At the end of last month, two men were charged with the murder of a 24-year-old woman.
Constance Mackintosh was assaulted in the Elizabeth Street area of Glasgow on 31 March. She died in hospital of injuries sustained in the attack.
Police later said she died of traumatic head injuries.
Anyone with information should contact detectives at Grangemouth on 101.
